Every interpreter working with LAKAY AGENCY agrees to follow this code, based on the national standards for healthcare and community interpreters (NCIHC and IMIA). It is part of each interpreter's written agreement.
1. Accuracy
Interpret everything that is said, completely and faithfully, without adding, leaving out or changing the meaning. Ask for repetition or clarification when needed, and correct your own mistakes as soon as you notice them.
2. Confidentiality
Keep everything learned during an assignment confidential, during and after the assignment. Never discuss cases, share photos or post anything about assignments on social media. Destroy notes at the end of each assignment.
3. Impartiality
Do not take sides, give personal opinions or advice. Disclose any conflict of interest (for example knowing the patient or family) before the assignment starts; in that case another interpreter will be assigned when possible.
4. Respect and role boundaries
Treat everyone with respect. Stay in the role of interpreter: do not run errands, fill out forms alone with the person, give rides or accept gifts or money from the people you serve.
5. Cultural awareness
When a cultural misunderstanding may affect communication, you may say so briefly to both parties, without speaking for either one.
6. Professionalism
Arrive on time, dressed appropriately, prepared and in a quiet place for remote work. Accept only assignments you are qualified for and inform us immediately if you cannot complete one.
7. Safety and duty to report
Follow the safety rules of each facility. If you witness abuse, a threat or danger, inform the provider or client on site and inform us. Follow the mandatory reporting rules that apply where you work.
8. Professional development
Keep improving your language and interpreting skills and your knowledge of terminology.
9. Non-discrimination
Serve every person equally, whatever their race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability or immigration status.
